Killing Apps

Postby hcharalson » Tue Sep 07, 2010 11:46 am

is there an easier way of killing apps and keeping them off. I just keep on tapping the little robot app killer every time i pass by and more and more apps just seem to turn on. how do you keep them from turning on when not in use?

You don't. You uninstall your task killer and never use it again. Here's why...

Android apps are coded to launch themselves depending on certain phone actions. For example, your phone rings, and X, Y, and Z apps launch themselves. You kill them, but they're just gonna re-launch themselves anyway. Multiply that by the number of times that you do an app kill in an average day, and your battery has just gone to hell. So don't use it.

Just because you see an app listed in a task killer, doesn't mean it's actively running. Sure it may have launched, but if you're not actively using it, it's just idling in the background. And if it's idle, it's not using processor power, and thus not using battery. Better to have it launch once and then stay in the background than re-launch itself multiple times over the course of a day..

Now see i have had good luck with my task killer. I have a Droid X and the task killer has actually improved my battery life for the most part. I definitely see a difference in battery life for the better. But what u said is interesting and i didn't know thats why some many programs will be out at one time
i think therefore Droid Does!

Thank you iBowtoAndroid for posting that, and I also see no difference in battery life when killing tasks. If anything it helps your battery to keep those apps in memory due to less work on the cpu loading it.

Task killers are useless on current devices.

Isn't automatic task-killing built into the Android system? Or, am I mistaken?

You are virtually correct... Samsung "Galaxy S" (TW) phones offer a built in app manager. However, for the most part Android by its self does a great job of managing apps, "task killers" as a stand alone app, are a waste of resources (i.e. battery life) and in many instances, actually use MORE SYSTEM resources then the apps it's designed to kill! "Task Killer" in many instances isn't actually showing running apps, rather what's in memory. Android OS will update this when newer apps are opened, the Android OS will manage this as needed. Immediately removing it won't do anything in the short or long term, another app once opened or sometimes not opened will fill this are, normally within seconds or minutes of you removing it.
