droid manual updates from v2.0

I hate the fact that droid issues updates at random to each phone. why isnt it like windows or apple, where you can go to their update site and download them manually if you want? better yet, why doesnt your phone automatically update when it becomes available? i messed up the process while patching a custom ROM and was forced to wipe everything and start from scratch which left me with the stock droid ROM v2.0. i am unable to update because i cant find the first update (2.0.1) and my phone hasnt realized that it can update by itself. please help.
