Transferring my original Droid to another original Droid

My original Motorola Droid, which I can't afford to replace right now, has a cracked screen. My son-in-law has one that he doesn't use anymore, both are rooted. How do I transfer my phone number to his old phone? Is it something I can do, or does it require a visit to a Verizon store?
